A Joyful Celebration That Points to Jesus

A Joyful Celebration That Points to Jesus

Let’s talk about one of the most joy-filled celebrations in the Bible, Sukkot, also called the Feast of Tabernacles. It’s a whole week of remembering how God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness and celebrating His goodness in our lives today.

In the Old Testament (Leviticus 23:33–44), God told His people to live in temporary shelters (called sukkot) to remember His care after He brought them out of Egypt. It was a time of thanksgiving for His provision, both then and now.

And the amazing part here? Sukkot points directly to Jesus!

God dwelling with us, John 1:14, tells us that Jesus “made His dwelling among us.” Just as God’s presence was with Israel in the wilderness, Jesus came to live among close, present, and personal.

During Sukkot’s water-pouring ceremony, Jesus stood and said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink” (John 7:37–38). He is our source of spiritual life and refreshment, The Living Water.

Revelation 21:3 reminds us that one day God will dwell with His people forever. No more sorrow, no more separation, this is his future promise.

So how can you make Sukkot meaningful (and fun!) for your family this week? Here are three easy ideas:

Build a Family Fort: Use blankets, chairs, or even the dining table to make a cozy sukkah. Read John 1:14 together inside and talk about how Jesus came to dwell with us.

Nature Walk Decor: Collect leaves, flowers and branches, then decorate your fort or table as a reminder that God provides everything we need.

Family Water Ceremony: Have each person pour water into a bowl, read John 7:37–38, and thank God for His provision and for Jesus, our Living Water.

Sukkot is all about joy, gratitude and remembering that everything we have comes from God. Whether you go all out or just try one small activity, you’ll be planting beautiful seeds of faith in your children’s hearts.
