Exploring Faith, Family, and the Feasts: A Conversation with Lauren, the Gentle Mommy
I had the pleasure of speaking with Lauren, known as The Gentle Mommy on Instagram, a Torah-pursuant mom of seven who embraces a unique blend of Old Testament traditions in her life on a farm in Utah. Lauren and her family have crafted a lifestyle grounded in faith, learning, and a deep appreciation for biblical teachings, traditions, and the land they inhabit.
Lauren shared how her family’s journey began with a deep love for Jesus and a desire to follow His example closely. Growing up Christian, both she and her husband were passionate about studying the Bible. Their journey led them to see Jesus as a "keeper of the Torah," a perspective that reshaped their approach to worship and how they observe traditional holidays. This outlook has led them to celebrate biblical feasts like Passover and Shavuot, while stepping away from more modern holidays like Christmas and Easter.
One of the standout moments in our conversation was Lauren’s beautiful description of preparing for Passover. Every year, her family goes through a symbolic spring cleaning, removing all leaven from their home as a way to reflect on their own personal growth and spiritual “leaven.” She explained how this ritual isn’t just about clearing out bread and cookies but serves as a meaningful conversation with her children about removing anything from their lives that could hinder them from serving God. “It’s a beautiful exercise,” she said, “to go through each room and ask, ‘Does this help us serve who we want to serve? Or is it leading us to sin?’”
Lauren also talked about the significance of teaching children to trust in God’s provision. Through the practice of counting the Omer, a ritual counting from Passover to Pentecost, Lauren’s family is reminded of the daily blessings they receive and the faith in God's continual care. The children eagerly count each day, placing a popsicle stick in a calendar pocket and reflecting on how each day is a step closer to Shavuot.
What shines through is her gentle, nurturing approach to parenting—an outlook that’s all about teaching her children the depth of biblical stories and connecting them to their own lives. Lauren humbly acknowledged the challenges, noting how easily her children mirror back her own shortcomings. "The Bible shows us people’s struggles," she reminded us, "and it’s really a story of how good God is, pursuing us through all those mistakes."
It was a heartwarming conversation that left me feeling inspired and reminded of the beauty of everyday faithfulness. Listening to Lauren, I was struck by how her family’s practices of cleansing, counting, and celebrating aren’t just traditions—they’re intentional ways to train hearts and grow closer to God as a family.
