Praying the Blessing Over Our Children

The blessing over children during Shabbat is a beautiful moment when parents pray for God’s protection and love over their little ones. In Jewish tradition, boys are blessed to be like Ephraim and Manasseh, and girls like Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah—reminders of God’s faithfulness across generations.

As Christians, this mirrors Jesus’ love for children. He welcomed them, blessed them, and taught us that the kingdom of God belongs to those with childlike faith. When we bless our children it’s a reflection of His care, reminding them they are loved by God and called to His purpose. Proverbs 22:6 encourages us to “train up a child in the way they should go,” and blessing them is a simple yet profound way to do so.

This week, I encourage you to gather your family before dinner and place your hands on your child’s head.

Pray these words:

“May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He shine His face upon you and give you peace.”

Add a personal prayer for their guidance and protection. Encourage your children to pray for others, nurturing their faith and love for Jesus. This tradition can become a cherished part of your Shabbat, planting seeds of faith that will grow for years to come.
